Transparency International’s 2009 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), launched today, reveals that the UK is struggling to recover from last year’s all-time-low score.

The CPI ranks 180 countries - including the UK – according to the perceived levels of corruption among public officials and politicians, as assessed by international experts and institutions. It scores countries on a scale of 0 to 10, where 0 is perceived to be highly corrupt and 10 indicates low levels of corruption.

At the end of a week-long meeting, the Conference of State Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption in Doha has agreed a review mechanism that falls short of effectively tackling the devastating effects of corruption.

While acknowledging the importance of adopting a review mechanism, and the efforts of the many governments who are committed to the success of this Convention, the UNCAC Civil Society Coalition (Coalition) is disappointed that this mechanism does not adequately reflect transparency, inclusiveness and effectiveness as called for by the G-20 leaders in their September statement.

Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) today expressed concern over the position taken by the World Bank with regard to changes introduced recently by the Government in the public procurement policy.
Transparency International Bosnia and Herzegovina (TI BiH) stricty condemns the document of the Government of Republic of Srpska, adopted at the Government session on November 9, under the title “False presentation of social and economic circumstances in RS”, considering it very dangerous and unacceptable. Documents of this kind create an atmosphere of lynch, and put state institutions in service of protecting individual interests of powerful oligarchies.

Global anti-corruption treaty will fail without agreement on an effective review mechanism in Doha this week

Doha/ Berlin: Starting today representatives of the 141 countries that have signed up to the UN Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) are meeting in Doha to decide whether to adopt a review mechanism that would give the treaty teeth.
Corruption undermines democracy, human rights and sustainable development. The UN convention, with its worldwide membership and wide-ranging provisions on transparency and accountability, has the potential to be the global anti-corruption standard.
