Welcome to the website of the Americas Department, where you can learn more about TI’s work in North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Although the continent boasts a fairly heterogeneous background, corruption is an issue common to each country in this region is. Despite its commonality as an issue, the extent and form of corruption differs from region to region. The fight against corruption in North America has been marked by accounting, financial and political scandals, while corruption in Latin America remains part of serious structural problems that not only adversely affect the region’s economic and democratic development, but also place a direct burden on the population.

TI works with 16 National Chapters in the Americas. In addition to working to promote the respective priorities of each country and subregion, the Americas department is working a number of hemispheric initiatives, such as the Inter-American Convention against Corruption. Against this background, collaborative efforts aimed at increasing transparency and integrity at the national level through TI's National Chaptersas well as at the regional level with respect to economic, legal and political relations, have a long-standing history in the Americas.

TILAC – TI’s network of national chapters in Latin America and the Caribbean

TILAC has succesfully worked for more than ten years as a regional network!

Established in 1996, the TILAC network was founded in response to provide mutual support and establish common strategies for addressing the issue of corruption; a problem that constitutes the root of many common features seen throughout the region. Today, the TILAC network is comprised of 13 TI National Chapters and contacts in Latin America and the Caribbean and maintains constructive partnerships with a number of organisations in the region. The TILAC Secretariat is responsible for coordinating the network’s efforts to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience and to promote regional anti-corruption agendas.

Over the past ten years, TILAC has become both an innovative source of tools and methodologies to be used in anti-corruption efforts, and an organization with the increasing ability to promote democratic governance in the region.

TILAC has identified the following priority issues for its work at the regional level:

to promote transparency in the area of public contracting
to reduce levels of corruption in the area of political financing
to promote integrity within the private sector
to promote investigative journalism addressing corruption-related issues
to promote transparency in Central America
