TI-Kenya: Regional Humanitarian Aid and Corruption Project Coordinator

Transparency International is a non-partisan coalition of individuals who share a vision of a corruption-free world. Founded in 1999, TI-Kenya is an autonomous Chapter in the TI movement, a non profit organisation pursuing the goal of a transparent Kenyan society, free of corruption in both the public and private spheres.

Transparency International's Secretariat has been carrying out a global programme to address corruption in humanitarian aid which will culminate in the publication of a handbook to guide humanitarian aid providers in detecting and deterring corruption in their operations. The next phase will advocate for the adoption of the handbook and develop a toolkit to help civil society organisations monitor corruption risks as well as the effectiveness5 of anti-corruption measures in humanitarian responses. TI is looking for a suitable candidate to fill the position of Regional Project Coordinator hosted and based in Nairobi-Kenya, whose role will be to monitor corruption in Humanitarian Aid in Sub-Sahara Africa where TI does not have National chapters.

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Developing and testing the toolkit to help civil society monitor anti-corruption performance of public and private humanitarian aid providers
  • Capacity building of participating civil society organisations in emergency-affected African countries to independently monitor corruption in humanitarian responses
  • Selecting the target African countries to participate in the Tl global humanitarian aid monitoring project
  • Advocating for humanitarian aid providers to enlist civil society in combating corruption in humanitarian operations in Africa.
  • Liaising between African civil society organisations including Tl -National chapters, TI-S and international consultants
  • Promoting the monitoring toolkit among public and non-governmental humanitarian agencies and humanitarian donors working in Africa
  • Advocating for all phases of the TI humanitarian aid programme (previous and current) in African regional and sub-regional fora and among African governments where there is currently no TI chapter.

Requirements
We wish to discuss this position with a highly skilled and motivated professional who holds an advanced degree in Humanitarian studies or a related social science. The candidate must possess, at least 5 years of proven experience with:

  • An in-depth knowledge of and experience in anti-corruption reform AND humanitarian assistance and the relevant linkages
  • Field experience in humanitarian operations, preferably in Sub-Saharan Africa
  • Minimum 5 year experience working with Civil Society Organizations particularly in the area of advocacy, capacity development, monitoring
  • Strong knowledge of governance, humanitarian and political concerns within the region
  • Well spoken French is essential/ Good working knowledge of German highly desirable
  • Ability to Work with teams, high degree of sensitivity for all cultures and their ways of working and ability to work in a multi-cultural setting,

Internship at Transparency International Zambia

Transparency International Zambia (TIZ) is seeking a highly motivated international intern to support its work in the Advocacy and Legal Advice Center (ALAC) based in Lusaka, Zambia.

Transparency International Zambia is a member of Transparency International (TI), the global civil society organization leading the fight against corruption. TIZ conducts its anti corruption work through core programmes and projects. One such project is the ALAC, a Centre which currently has a full-time member of staff working with support from other programme staff within the organization.

TIZ has a position for an international intern for a minimum period of 3 months and a maximum period of 6 months.

Description of Internship

Main function: Assisting the project coordinator in receiving, processing and following up complaints with appropriate instructions and authorities.

Starting Date: 1st October, 2009
Duration: Three to Six months; full time Monday to Friday
Remuneration: approximately K 350,000 (equivalent to $70 on the ruling bank rate) per week as transport allowance to facilitate movement from the area of residence to the office everyday

Note that: TIZ does not carter for accommodation and meals. The intern will also need to have a health insurance cover as TIZ does not take care of medical issues. The Intern will further need to cater for his/her own transport to and from their country of residence and all visa fees.

Key responsibilities:

  • Answering phone calls on the Toll-Free line and attending to all ALAC clients
  • Entering and updating Initial Contacts on the data base
  • Following-up on complaints reported by Clients to build up on possible cases
  • Consultation with Clients on Corruption issues to find out the details of their complaints
  • Advising Clients on issues of corruption
  • Preparing cases on behalf of Clients with details of their complaints according to the available documentation and information
  • Doing legal analysis of the cases, recommending on what action must be taken and presenting them to the ALAC Advisory Committee
  • Preparing complete Referral Folders with all relevant documents on cases on behalf of Clients
  • Referring cases to relevant Institutions and making follow-ups

Knowledge, experience and skills:

  • Excellent spoken and written English skills
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • Some prior office experience, good knowledge of MS Word applications
  • Knowledge of African governance and political systems is an added advantage
  • A law degree is a must
  • Some knowledge of and considerable interest in the work of TI and the field of anti-corruption
